Many people fast because they want to lose weight. But if we’re being more precise, what most people actually want is to lose body fat while preserving as much muscle and lean mass as possible.
And that’s where things become more interesting.
Because one of the most common questions about fasting is: How long do I actually need to fast before my body starts using stored fat for energy?
You may have heard people say that it takes 12 hours, 16 hours, 18 hours, 24 hours, or even longer. You may have also heard that you have to completely eliminate carbohydrates to burn fat.
But the reality is more complicated than a single number.
Your body is constantly switching between different sources of energy. It doesn’t suddenly go from “not burning fat” to “burning fat” at one specific hour.
Instead, the contribution of different fuel sources changes depending on your recent food intake, carbohydrate availability, physical activity, energy expenditure, body composition, and many other individual factors.
So rather than giving you a magical number of hours, I want to explain what’s actually happening inside your body.
Let’s start with something fundamental: how your body stores and uses energy.
When you eat, the carbohydrates you consume are broken down into glucose and other usable forms of energy. Some of that energy can be used immediately by your cells. Some can be stored for later.
Your body has several ways of storing energy.
One important short-term storage system is glycogen, which is stored primarily in the liver and skeletal muscles.
The liver helps maintain blood glucose levels between meals, while muscle glycogen serves largely as a local fuel reserve for muscle activity.
When food is available, your body has access to incoming energy.
When you stop eating, the situation gradually changes.
As time passes without food, your body begins relying more heavily on stored fuel.
This is one of the reasons fasting can change the proportion of energy coming from carbohydrates and fat.
But here’s the important part:
Fat burning is not an on-and-off switch.
Your body can use both carbohydrates and fat for energy at the same time. The proportion changes depending on what your body needs and what fuel is available.
That’s why saying, “You only start burning fat after exactly 24 hours,” is an oversimplification.
And it’s also why someone can be fasting and still have a different metabolic response from someone else who has been fasting for the same amount of time.
The question isn’t simply, “How many hours have I fasted?”
The better question is:
What is happening with my energy balance, my glycogen stores, my physical activity, and my overall nutrition?
Once you understand that, fasting becomes much easier to understand.
